for children?
Yes! Here are some recommendations of classical music for children, along
with suggested activities. Check out CDs at your local library!
Carnival of Animals by Camille Saint-Saens
These short pieces are written to sound like animals!
Activities:
1. Try listening to each for the first time and see if you and your child can
guess which animal is represented. Talk about what you hear. Is it a big
animal or small animal? Are the sounds that you hear high or low? Fast or
slow?
2. Move around the room like each animal as you listen to the music.
Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev
Each friend that you meet along the way is represented by a different
instrument!
Activities:
1. Take time to listen to the narrated and musical story of Peter and the Wolf.
2. Talk about the instruments and sounds used to represent each animal. Are
they high sounds or low sounds? Fast or slow?
The Nutcracker by Peter Tchaikovsky
These pieces are great to dance to! And you may recognize many from the
ballet or from watching Fantasia.
Activities:
1. Get out your dancing scarves and move!
Flight of the Bumblebee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
This fast-paced music really does sound like bumblebees! Use your imagine
when listening or dancing along!
Activities:
1. "Fly" around the room as bees!
2. Play the freeze game.
Beethoven's Wig 1 & 2
These CDs put fun and silly words to classical music. You will recognize most
of the tunes and most of the songs contain information about the composer or
style of music.
